Nancy
Published in School & Library Binding by Harcourt Young Classics (October, 1989)
Average review score:

This is a beautiful book!I love this story. The reviewer here doesn't get it. I'm looking for another copy because we have read ours so many times that we've almost worn it out. One page-- "OH YES YOU WILL" -- sums up so much of childhood. Read it and share it with your kids.

Finding power in the wonderful names of our Lord! This book is one book which caught my eye, and a strong magnetic pull made me pick it up. As I was flipping through the book, I saw the many names and titles of our God, with their respective Scripture references and a brief devotion for each of the names of our precious Lord.
This book will be one of my most treasured, as each time I pick it up, I find it hard to put down, as my eyes and heart want to go on reading...

Quaker Crosscurrents: Three Hundred Years of Friends in the New York Yearly Meetings
Published in Hardcover by Syracuse University Press (June, 1995)
Average review score:

This is a splendid history of an active religious group. This book provides a remarkable glimpse into the rich history of the Hudson River Valley and Upstate New York into Canada through the lens of the Quakers. Formerly a prominent religion in New York State ranking third at the beginning of the 19th century, New York Quakers have had a leading role in education, prison reform, women's rights, peace activism and temperance. The chapters on the 19th century are particularly rich in fascinating details while the 20th century material is a little more general.

Selections from Herodotus
Published in Paperback by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Txt) (August, 1977)
Average review score:

Good selection with excellent toolbox providedA good selection of usually quite exciting stories - many of which are pure fiction rather than anything resembling modern history. Herodotos was a truly great storyteller. He is usually introduced in the curriculum only after Basic Greek and Attic Prose (Platon, Xenophon), but if your memory is slipping, like that of yours truly sure is, you will appreciate this Selection even more, for it comes with a very helpful Commentary, which details most syntactic phenomena, and even morphology, line for line, even such matter that is already taught in the Basic and Attic Greek Courses. So you get a good rehearsal of the basics as well as learning a new dialect of Classic Greek - i.e. Ionian.
Moreover, there is an very full alphabetical Vocabulary following the Commentary part, which includes not only words peculiar to Herodotos, but again, even basic Greek words you were supposed to remember from your Basic Course!
After having studied and learned Herodotos, you are equipped with a sufficient grasp of the Ionian Dialect to proceed to The Ultimate Experience - Homeros. His "epic dialect" is mostly Ionian in character.(and you will appreciate his simpler syntax...).
A small snag: the Greek text is printed in a very small font which is peculiar to British and American works on Greek, and may therefore be somewhat tiresome for the eye. The English text is more normal-sized, but, being a reprint of a much older original, is slightly faded. I would have loved it if the text had been reset anew with modern fonts.

Highly recommended both for the good choice of entertaining stories and for the excellent toolboxes provided as help for the eager learner of Classical Greek.

Shooting the Bull: A Collection of Barbour County Folk Lore
Published in Paperback by McClain Printing Company (January, 1997)
Average review score:

Great old folklore.Author really captured the humor and small town feeling found back in the old days and left out of most tales.

A Sip of Aesop
Published in School & Library Binding by Scholastic (September, 1995)
Average review score:

A joy to hear, a joy to read."If naps and laps you do confuse, You are surely bound to lose."
Taking Aesop's familiar gems and re-setting them into witty verse, Yolen polishes the old stories and makes them sparkle. The poetry, while seemingly simple, can lead kids through a bit of puzzling before they can explicate each line, even when they know the original fable. A great book for teachers.

South Carolina's Revolutinary War Battlefields: A Tour Guide
Published in Paperback by Pelican Pub Co (April, 2002)
Average review score:

Best Book on American Revolutionary War Sites in SCThis is a succinct book complete with maps, pictures and directions on historical sites relating to the American Revolution in South Carolina (almost 50 entries). The author rightly asserts South Carolina's preeminence in having the most battles during the war, and the important contributions of her patriotic sons, such as Generals Sumter and Marion-without whom there would have been no victory. The war may have started in New England, but it ended here in the South-particularly SC. By reading this book one can gather a quick understanding of the beginning and ending of the conflict as all entries are arranged in chronological order, and the pictures show the actual monuments as they exist today, thus preventing any great expectations of park-like settings if there is none. The directions are very easy to follow, even to the more obscure sites, and it lets the reader know if the site is on private land or not. An excellent source to draw on by South Carolinians and a must for anyone interested in visiting any of these sites while touring South Carolina.
